Car hire for newly-passed drivers
Updated October 2026 · 2 min read
Newly-passed drivers can hire a car even with no credit history, because short-term rental is judged on affordability and ID rather than a credit track record. The biggest cost to plan for is usually insurance, which is arranged separately, not the hire itself.
No credit history is not a dealbreaker
If you have just passed your test you probably have little or no credit history, and finance scoring often reads that as risk and declines. Hire does not need a long credit record, so an empty file is far less of an obstacle. You are matched to a partner who works with new drivers rather than penalised for being one.
Budget for insurance separately
For most new drivers, insurance is the larger number, and it is arranged separately from the hire. Get an insurance quote alongside the monthly hire cost so you know your true total. A telematics ("black box") policy is often the cheapest route for younger drivers.
Start small and flexible
A sensible, affordable first car on a short, flexible term lets you build confidence (and, with the right insurer, a no-claims record) without a multi-year commitment. You can always step up later once you are settled.
FAQs
I passed last month, can I hire?
Often yes. Newly-passed drivers can be matched to partners who consider new licence-holders.
Is there a minimum age?
It depends on the partner and vehicle; many start at 21, some lower. We match you to one whose policy fits.
Is insurance included?
Usually not, it is arranged separately and is often the bigger cost, so budget for it alongside the monthly.
