# How to become a self-employed courier

Updated October 2026 · 3 min read

**To become a self-employed courier you need a suitable van, the right insurance, a way to get work (a network round or independent clients), and to register as self-employed with HMRC. Short-term van hire is a flexible way to get road-ready without buying a vehicle, and insurance is arranged separately. There is no credit check to get a quote and enquiring never affects your credit score.**
