# Claiming VAT back on a business van lease

Updated October 2026 · 3 min read

**If your business is VAT-registered and the van is for business use, you can normally reclaim 100% of the VAT on a van lease or hire. Cars are different: the VAT is usually blocked at 50% because HMRC assumes some private use. That one difference makes a van one of the most tax-efficient ways to put a vehicle on the road for a company.**

## Why a van beats a car for VAT

Most people don't clock this until their accountant points it out. If your business is VAT-registered and you lease or hire a van that's used for work, you can normally claim back all of the VAT on the payments. Do the same with a car and you're usually capped at half. The reason is simple: HMRC assumes a car will get some private use, so it blocks 50% of the VAT by default. A van is treated as a work tool, so the full amount is fair game. On a £400-a-month van that's roughly £800 a year staying in the business that you'd never see on the equivalent car.

## The rule that catches people out: business use

The 100% only holds if the van is genuinely for business. A bit of incidental private use, like nipping to the shops on the way home, is usually fine. But if the van is really the family runaround dressed up as a business cost, HMRC can push back. Keep it honest, keep a note of your business mileage, and you're on solid ground. If you're not VAT-registered, none of this applies and you simply pay the VAT-inclusive price like anyone else.

## What about maintenance, and is it tax-deductible?

If your agreement bundles maintenance and it's shown as a separate line, the VAT on that part is 100% reclaimable too, even on a car. So on a car you might reclaim half the VAT on the vehicle and all of it on the maintenance, if it's itemised. Separately from VAT, the monthly payments are a business cost, so they lower your taxable profit. Vans don't have the CO2-based rental restriction that applies to some cars, so a business van lease is about as tax-efficient as it gets.
